Summary

Snag is a local-first browser extension and desktop application. It does not operate an analytics, advertising, account, or cloud synchronization service. Information handled by the extension is used only to detect downloadable resources and complete downloads requested by the user.

Information handled

  • Browsing and website resource information: the active page URL and title, media or file URLs, resource type, content type, size, referrer, and request headers needed to identify and download a resource.
  • Authentication information: cookies or signed request data that the browser would send to the selected media origin when they are necessary to access a user-requested download. Supported video resolution may also use narrowly filtered authentication cookies for that service.
  • Local settings and operational state: disabled site preferences, detected-media state, connection status, and pending commands needed to communicate reliably with the desktop app.

Chrome Web Store policy treats this information as user data even when it is processed only on the user's device. Snag therefore discloses it here and in the store listing.

How the information is used

Snag uses this information to identify downloadable resources, display them to the user, resolve media formats, preserve the browser network identity required by some sites, and send an explicitly chosen task to the locally installed Snag desktop app. The desktop app then contacts the resource's original server to complete the download.

Storage, transmission, and retention

Extension state is kept in Chrome's local or session storage. Download information is transmitted through Chrome Native Messaging only to the Snag desktop app installed on the same computer. Snag does not send browsing activity, cookies, or download history to a developer-operated server.

Session detection data is replaced as pages change or the browser session ends. Site preferences remain until the user changes or clears them. The desktop app stores task history and local logs on the user's device according to its settings.

Sharing and sale

Snag does not sell user data, use it for personalized advertising, transfer it to data brokers, or use it to determine creditworthiness. Data is shared only with the user-installed Snag desktop app and the original content servers as necessary to perform the download.

User choice and deletion

Users can disable detection for individual sites, remove the extension, clear extension storage in Chrome, and delete desktop download history and logs from their own device.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

Snag's use of information received from Chrome APIs complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. User data is used only to provide or improve the extension's single, user-facing download function.

Children and lawful use

Snag is not directed to children and does not knowingly collect children's personal information. Users are responsible for downloading only content they own or are otherwise authorized to download. Snag does not grant rights to third-party content.

Policy changes

Material changes will be reflected on this page with a revised effective date and, when required, in the extension interface or Chrome Web Store disclosures.
